Breakout Sessions

ChestHead

Chest and Head

Goals: Make sure everyone can demo chest and head with dynamic variations. In the process, this will give participants the opportunity to hear multiple variations of these sounds to expand their understanding of listening in this way. In the process, we want to redirect them from placement and imagery to function.

What to do:

  • Warm them up for a few minutes

  • In the lower range, sing notes in chest, breathy, pressed and balanced

  • Then try moving between breathy and pressed in chest voice (messa di voce)

  • If time, bring head voice down. Begin breathy and intensify into a heady mix while descending on a 5-4-3-2-1

Anchor 1

Mix

Goals: Make sure everyone understands how to use glides and apply the >< and < > concept when helping singers learn how to mix. This will ensure they leave with at least one strong approach to apply to help their students mix.

What to do:

  • Have them do a >< exercise from forte to mezzo piano and back to forte on a single pitch.

  • Have them do a glide in chest on a 1 / 5 \ 1 transitioning from chest to mix and back to chest

    • Take any variation of mix they can give you if this exercise is new to them

    • If they can easily execute the exercise ask them to make their mix lighter or heavier and explore so participants can hear all of the different possibilities that could be categorized as “mix”

  • After everyone has done that exercise, have them sing a 5-4-3-2-1 pattern and descend into the lower part of their range asking them to intensify as they descend.

  • Then explore the middle with exercises of your choice

Belt

Belt

Goals: Make sure everyone understands how to use calling to help a student discover thier “belt” and how to improve coordination once the sound is established.

What to do:

  • Start with calling “On no you don’t,” “Hey Taxi,” “That darn cat”

    • If belting is new, take the time to find the right sound for their voice

    • If it comes easy to them, explore the range and discuss

    • If they already know how to belt, use slow glides or a 1-3-5-3-1 pattern to see how stable their voice is and coach accordingly

    • If they’re really good, use them to demo a variation of sounds for everyone to hear and discuss

Mimicry

Mimicry

Goals: Make sure participants understand how the various parts of the vocal tract move to change a singer’s timbre. Show them the value of mimicry in both investigating a student’s function and giving functional feedback to singers.

What to do:

  • Begin with “Sweet Child of Mine,” the GNR version, go around the room and have people mimic the sound.

    • If they can easily find the sound, ask them to describe what is happening in their vocal track in terms of vocal function, move them away from placement and imagery.

    • If they cannot produce the sound, guide them to explore their vocal tract with the range of motion exercises and help them adjust as necessary to produce the sound

    • Then do the same with the "Sweet Child O' Mine" - New Orleans Style Guns N' Roses Cover ft. Miche Braden

  • Next play with “You’ll Never Walk Alone”

  • Then play with “I will Always Love You”

  • If there is time, explore the Wheel of Impressions video, what are they doing to impersonate each singer
