Jess has been coming to the Institute every year since 2009 and joined the CCM Institute faculty in 2016. She is a creativity coach for singers, an indie-soul singer-songwriter, and a popular musics voice specialist.

After exploring multiple genres in her younger years and earning her master’s in western classical performance and pedagogy, Jess gradually found her sound in soul, jazz, and chamber pop, and was able to release her artistic voice through trauma healing and creativity coaching. This culminated in the release of her crowdfunded debut album ANIMA in 2022. She appeared on American Public Television’s Songs at the Center and NPR's Mountain Stage. She was also a two-time quarterfinalist in the American Traditions Competition and won Best Cover Song twice in the Ohio Music Awards.

Her journey as an artist led to the evolution of her voice studio into True Colors Voice and Artist Coaching, which provides trauma-informed creativity and voice coaching to singer-artists. She helps singers look beyond technique for their artistry and get unstuck in creative projects. She earned trauma certification in order to help clients more effectively use what they’ve learned in therapy to experience fulfilling singing and creativity. She also trains teachers to coach singers from an artist-led perspective in order to build their autonomy alongside their artistic voice.

In addition to her coaching work, she’s the creator and editor of the blogs Singing in Popular MusicsCreativity Coaching for Singers, and Sound + Mind. She’s also been published in the Journal of Singing and in the 2021 book Action-Based Approaches in Popular Music Education.
